FedEx turns employee uniforms into blankets for the needy

A FedEx Express initiative has already helped nearly 7,000 needy people who would be cold this winter here in Brazil

The transport company started a campaign to recycle the employees' uniform, which turns them into blankets for donation. The action has benefited 20 NGOs across the country so far.

The first batch managed to collect more than four tons of uniforms, which were delivered to branches throughout Brazil. The campaign has already surpassed the action carried out in 2020, which produced 4.9 thousand blankets.

blanket donation

The recycled blankets will be delivered to institutions that serve the socially vulnerable population.

In addition to these, 2,100 blankets, made in a smaller size and thickness, will go to shelters that take care of animals that are up for adoption.

The project intends to provide the correct disposal of parts, while integrating a series of social, economic and environmental contributions.

“At FedEx, we are committed to connecting people and possibilities around the world,” explained Gustavo Kornitz, Marketing Director for FedEx Express in Brazil.

He said that "by recycling the uniforms, turning them into blankets, we were able to positively impact the environment and the local community".

And help comes at a good time, in times of pandemic: “Especially this year, due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on society, we feel even more fulfilled in being able to help those in need,” he said.

Sustainability

FedEx has been engaged in actions aimed at sustainability. In March of this year, the company announced a goal of achieving carbon neutral operations globally by 2040.

The company is initially targeting more than $2 billion of investments in three key areas: electric vehicles, sustainable energy and carbon sequestration.

To make the action happen, there is a $100 million collaboration with Yale University to help create the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture. This new center will accelerate research on scale carbon sequestration methods.
