China must cancel debts of poor countries, asks head of World Bank

Country is the main creditor of low-income countries and has not participated in the G20 suspension of payments initiative

World Bank President David Malpass has called on all rich countries, with an emphasis on China, to cancel the debts of poor countries. The aim is to help them face the pandemic.

The speech was highlighted during the online event of the Frankfurt School of Finance, on Monday (5), reported the newspaper “South China Morning Post“, Hong Kong.

According to Malpass, even though it is mainly responsible for the indebtedness of “several” poor countries, China does not fully participate in the G20 Debt Suspension Initiative.

“Many creditors make debt relief too shallow to meet the fiscal needs of the pandemic and the inequality that surrounds us,” he said, referring to Beijing.

The project, launched in April, offers a temporary “moratorium” for 73 low-income countries, especially those most affected by the pandemic, such as Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique.

So far, 43 countries have received about $5 billion to fund social measures to fight Covid-19.

“Debt problems in Africa and emerging economies are a result of the rapid growth of new official creditors, especially well capitalized ones China,” said Malpass.

Beijing is the biggest bilateral creditor for most emerging economies. Of the debt plan of poor nations, 70% of the amount – or US$ 7.1 billion – was or will go to China by December.

The Chinese government said it had received more than 20 requests for financial aid since the pandemic began.
