Gabriel Garcia Márquez lists the 24 books that shaped his genius

Fonte PENSAR CONTEMPORANEO

Gabriel García Márquez, author of One Hundred Years of Solitude, in his autobiography “Living to count” reveals 24 books that impacted him and made him a writer.

Here is the list:

- The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka. «When I finished reading, the irresistible desire to live in that other's paradise remained. The new day surprised me at the typewriter they had loaned me to try something that looked like Kafka's poor bureaucrat, turned into a huge beetle. In the following days, I did not go to university for fear that the magic would dispel the envy that was reflected in the beads of sweat that covered my face ».

- The Magic Mountain, Thomas Mann

- The Man in the Iron Mask, Alexandre Dumas

- Sound and Fury, William Faulkner

- While in agony, William Faulkner

- Wild Palm Trees, William Faulkner. «Much of what was incomprehensible to me in Faulkner, now opened with all the beauty and sincerity of simplicity».

- Aleph and other works by Jorge Luis Borges

- The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway

- Counterpoint, Aldous Huxley

- Oedipus the King, Sophocles. « the first reading, it seemed like a perfect work».

- The House of Seven Roofs, Nathaniel Hawthorne. «This book left a mark on me forever».

- Father Tomás' Hut, Harriet Beecher Stowe

- Moby Dick, Herman Melville

- Children and Lovers, David Herbert Lawrence

- The Thousand and One Nights. “Until I dared to think that the wonders that Sherazade told really happened in the daily life of his time, and stopped happening because of the incredulity and realistic cowardice of the following generations. For this reason too, it seemed impossible for anyone of our time to believe again that one could fly over cities and mountains aboard a sphere, or that a slave Cartagena de Indias would be punished for 200 years in a bottle, unless the author of the story was able to make his readers believe. »

- Rats and Men, John Steinbeck

- The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck

- The Tobacco Road, Erskine Caldwell

- Tales, Katherine Mansfield

- Manhattan Transfer, John Dos Passos

- Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf. Márquez wrote that he knew Virginia Woolf by heart. And after a second reading, I got the look of a 'person who discovered the world'.

- Orlando, Virginia Woolf

- The Portrait of Jennie, Robert Nathan

- Ulysses, James Joyce. "Ulysses not only helped me to discover a world of my own that I had never suspected, but it was also an invaluable technique for the freedom of language, time management and the structures of my books."

Thanks to them, my favorite books, I understood that the real benefit for the soul is only provided by those books that you are not obliged to read.
